La ville de Blaye est une ancienne place-forte militaire chargée de préserver la sécurité du port de Bordeaux, Blaye abrite une citadelle du XVIIe siècle, œuvre de l'ingénieur militaire Vauban. Dominant le paysage urbain, elle est classée au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco depuis 2008, dans le cadre du réseau des sites majeurs de Vauban.
A Blaye, Vauban trace le plan d’une nouvelle enceinte à quatre bastions, trois demi-lunes et deux portes. Il transforme ainsi l’enceinte médiévale en réutilisant systématiquement les ouvrages préexistants sans que cela soit visible.
