Les radeliers de la Durance, une histoire de passionnés

Dans les Hautes-Alpes, la rivière La Durance permettait le transport des bois jusqu'à la Méditerranée sur 260 km navigables.
L'activité professionnelle millénaire de radelier, souvent oubliée par les historiens, donnait un métier aux haut-alpins de l'Embrunais, du Queyras et du Buëch.
Durant des siècles, les forêts domaniales de Durbon et de Boscodon et les forêts du Queyras fournissaient en sapins, épicéas et mélèzes les grandes agglomérations de Provence et les chantiers navals de la Méditerranée, en particulier ceux du port de Toulon.
Des pièces de bois, liées les unes aux autres par des liens végétaux, constituaient le radeau et descendaient les eaux tumultueuses de la Durance, conduites par les radeliers, de vrais marins de rivière.

L'avènement du chemin de fer, ses progrès et ses évolutions, ont fait disparaître petit à petit un métier ancestral.
Aujourd'hui le cours de la Durance a subi de nombreux aménagements avec notamment la création de la retenue d'eau artificielle de Serre-Ponçon.

Autrefois, la principale activité économique de la rivière était générée par le flottage du bois. Consommés en grande quantité
pour le chauffage, utilisés comme matériau de construction - pour les arsenaux royaux de Louis XIV par exemple - ou encore combustible nécessaire au fonctionnement des usines, sapins, épicéas et mélèzes étaient charriés sur la Durance par les radeliers, fêtés encore aujourd'hui tous les ans au mois de juin lors d’une grande reconstitution historique. Aujourd'hui, l'électricité a succédé au bois.
 
Dans l'Embrunais, une poignée de passionnés a voulu se souvenir de ce beau métier tant associé aux Hautes-Alpes et a créé en 1993 la première association française de radeliers, s'engageant à travailler à la réhabilitation historique du métier de radelier.
